50 Kata practitioners came to the 2015 Faye Allen Kata Championship and Clinics hosted by DC Judo in Washington DC this past Saturday 9/26. The event drew from a 1000 mile area including participants from as far away as Massachusetts, South Carolina, and Delaware. Four katas were competed and two parallel clinics helped students improve Nage No Kata and Ju No Kata in an all day event. Three clinicians – Edwin Takemori, Karen Whilden, and Diane Jackson – led the instruction and served as kata judges. There were more than 350 hours of Judo practice. That’s a lot of Judo!
Competition was divided into two categories: Randori No Kata and Other Katas. The top finishers in each category received medals designed by Sensei Edwin Takemori commemorating kata powerhouse Faye Allen who supported the growth of kata competition locally and nationally.
