Why do I have to register for classes?

There are four reasons:

  • We want to know who to expect as it can shape our preparation to teach the class. If we expect a class entirely of advanced students, we may change the focus of the class to advanced material.
  • We use the attendance data for promotion qualification. It’s how we track how many classes you have attended.
  • We use the class list to send out an update when we have a last minute cancellation.
  • It’s for insurance reasons. If you are injured at class and you haven’t signed in, well that would get complicated…

You can register through our online registration and attendance system called MindBodyOnline

What is MindBodyOnline?

As DC Judo has grown, we’ve needed a way to keep track of who attends which classes. We selected a commercial service – MindBodyOnline – to help us do that. Many gyms and yoga studios use the same software. We’ve customized MindBodyOnline for DC Judo and we’re continuing to work to make it easier to use.

Can I register on my phone?

Absolutely. You can use the web site from your phone or download the MindBody Connect app at https://www.mindbodyonline.com/connect. From the app you can sign up, register, and cancel classes as well as make payments. MindBody Connect is available on iPhone and Android.

I always come on Wednesdays. Can’t you just expect me to be there?

Yes we can through the registration system. When you sign up for a class, you can choose to register for a series of classes. You could say “I will come every Wednesday until I go on my Peace Corp trip in October.” You simply select Wednesday classes through 9/30 and the system will register you for each Wednesday class. You can do this one time for each program at (Kennedy or Edgewood).

When I go to sign up, it gives me a message saying that I don’t meet the prerequisites for the class. What do I need to register?

The only prerequisites we have are related to age. You must be 16+ to sign up for adult classes. If you haven’t provided your birthday, the system can’t check how old you are. You can make this go away by entering your birthdate in your profile information.

How do I pay for classes?

All DC Judo classes are on a “class pass” system. That is, you purchase a class pass to cover the costs of your participation in class. Each class pass has 5 classes on it. The base price for the class pass is $50. Each time you are checked in at class, our system takes one class off the pass. When your pass runs out (or times out after 2 mos), we charge you automatically for another class pass.

Since we started DC Judo, we’ve been on a mission to expose lots of people to Judo and its benefits. We are an educational non-profit organization and our goal remains to share Judo with everyone who cares to learn. It costs money to run any organization – and DC Judo is no different. But we don’t want people to stop Judo because they lost their job, for example, or because they are students or unemployed.

So we have a scholarship program that helps reduce the cost of the class pass. You can apply for the scholarship in person at class.

Will I be charged for a class I miss?

We don’t charge for missed classes. You can also remove yourself from the registration for a class if you know you will miss it.

As attendance grows, we may require registration to secure a place. If your registration blocked someone else from attending, we might consider charging you at some point in the future. Just not now.

Hey I was at class last Friday, but I got an email saying “We missed you at class.” What gives?

If you register for a class and miss it, we send a message to see that you are ok. If you get that message in error, it means that you weren’t checked in as present at class (oops!). Reply to the message with a note and we’ll make sure you get counted correctly.

What is a drop in fee?

The drop in fee is the amount you pay to participate in a single class rather than on a class pass. When you drop in, you pay a one time fee. Drop in Fees are $15. Even if you only plan to come 4 times in a two month period, the class pass is cheaper.
